About me

Paul Tune is a Senior Machine Learning Engineer at Canva. He has experience in the following areas:

  • Computer vision: image processing and deep learning
  • Search and ranking: some basics in Apache Solr and the deployment of learning-to-rank models
  • Natural language processing: deep learning applied to language classification models
  • Churn modelling: predicting user churn based on behavioural data

In a prior life, Paul Tune was a postdoctoral research fellow at the School of Mathematical Sciences, University of Adelaide, working with Prof. Matthew Roughan from 2012 to 2016. His research specialised in Internet Traffic matrices, compressive sensing, some information theory, and signal processing. He has worked with A/Prof Jun Xu on scheduling algorithms for high speed switches and the measurement of social networks.

He graduated with a PhD from the University of Melbourne in 2010, under the supervision of Prof. Darryl Veitch, with a thesis entitled “Measurement Methods in Networks and Sparse Signal Recovery”. His Google Scholar profile is here.

Outside of work, he spends time on gymnastics, photography, singing and playing the guitar. He also has a strong interest in investing and finance.
